This purpose of this project was to expand the People Mover Stations at the Pittsburgh International Airport to allow for installation of a third car in each tunnel. The project involved upgrading the smoke ventilation systems including the installation of new fans, controls and exhaust structures. The station renovations included general construction work necessary to expand the stations along with modifications to the tunnels to accommodate the new smoke ventilation systems. This work required close coordination with the operator of the system so that passenger flow and maintenance activities would not be impeded. Most of the work in the public areas was performed during off peak hours to limit the disruption to passenger flow. Mechanical, electrical, fire protection, communication and fire alarms systems were extended and modified to accommodate the new stations.
This project also included excavation for tunnel access to remove the existing cars and install the new cars along with coordination of the installation by the car manufacturer.
