Management Engineering Corporation (MEC) provided Construction Management and General Contracting services for the construction and relocation of US Airway's Operations Control Center located in Robinson Township near Pittsburgh International Airport. The purpose of this project was to consolidate various associated departments comprising the Operations Control Center from diverse locations into a central location. The project included eight separate construction phases encompassing 128,000 square feet of floor space spread over seven floors of three separate buildings.

MEC managed a variety of contractors whose work included demolition, construction of drywall partitions and acoustical ceilings, erection of modular workstations in conjunction with data/telecommunication installation and electrical distribution. An uninterrupted power supply system was installed to prevent the shut down of critical computer systems in the event of power failure. New heating and air conditioning distribution systems provided a comfortable working environment for office workers. Fire protection and alarm systems were renovated to current codes.

A key component of the project was the construction of 7200 square feet of a new second floor level within an existing high bay area of one of the occupied buildings. MEC safely supervised erection of a new structural steel framing system and concrete slab on steel decking within the occupied building. Fire-rated perimeter walls, interior drywall partitions and acoustical ceilings and were installed along with an electrical distribution system, heating and air conditioning equipment, fire protection devices and a data/telecommunication system.

MEC was responsible for coordinating the phased relocation of approximately 600 US Airways employees into the renovated facilities which were required to remain operational during construction. MEC produced weekly schedule updates and held weekly coordination meetings to monitor progress. The main control center was relocated over a weekend without any operational loss to the ongoing flight operations of US Airways.

This design/built project was completed on time and within budget over a six month period.
